pain is as much a part of the human condition as the common cold.
In fact, eight out of ten adults will experience an acute episode
of back pain at some point in their lifetime. Back pain is the
second most common cause of missed workdays due to illness and
the most common cause of disability. Fortunately, most episodes
of back pain resolve with time: approximately 50% of patients
will experience relief within two weeks and 90% within three months.

Pain Answers - Giving you the information to make
informed decisions regarding minor and acute back pain.
A lot of people think that sitting is easier on their backs than
standing or lifting. Not true. Many people have the notion that,
if their back pain gets bad enough, they can always resort to
surgery. Nothing could be further from the truth. Not very many
years ago, back pain patients were routinely put to bed, sometimes
for weeks or months. No longer. It is not uncommon for instance,
for anti-depressant medication to be prescribed for patients who
suffer with back pain. MRI is simply not necessary for the diagnosis
of the vast majority of back pain. What is necessary - and the
area where many people are getting short shrift - is a good clinical
exam made by an interested and experienced physician who isn't
giving you the bum's rush. An injection of chymopapain into a
herniated disc has saved many people from surgery. It has also
caused many serious complications, but only in the U.S.

- Postgraduate Medicine: Patient Notes: Sciatica Sciatica - The
sciatic nerves are the largest nerves in the body--about as big
around as your finger. They start in the lower spine, pass behind
the hip joint, and go down the buttock and back of the leg to
the foot. Pain from this nerve, called sciatica, may be felt from
the hip to the big toe. What causes sciatica? Is sciatica different
from back pain? What can I do for sciatica? Tips on avoiding sciatica.

- In sciatica, there is a pain down into the leg, which travels
below the knee, and may involve the foot. There may be numbness
and there may be weakness of the lower leg muscles. These symptoms
may come on their own, but are often combined with low back pain.
The order in which the symptoms appear may vary. Sometimes the
back pain comes before the sciatica, and sometimes will follow.

- Sciatica, Acupuncture and Traditional Oriental Medicine - My
very first experience with traditional Chinese medicine came when
I had some sciatica pain during a kung fu workout. I asked my
kung fu teacher about it. He showed me some acupoints on my leg
to press at home that night and the next day. They weren't too
hard to get to, but it was nice for him to press them for me this
first time. To my utter amazement, the pain was 95% gone the very
next day. The sciatica pain that began in my lower back and radiated
down to my little toe was gone after one session of acupressure.
In my experience, the pain would peak for about three days, and
then take about two weeks to completely fade away. But in this
case it was completely gone in two days.
view - Sciatica can baffle
physicians and other medical professionals, arising without warning
and going on and on. Sciatica often accompanies low back pain,
which is incredibly widespread, it can cripple its victims and
drive them to seek all sorts of solutions, both appropriate and
ineffective. It's incredibly widespread, second only to the common
cold. sciatica.org

- A resource of free information for sciatica sufferers - What
causes sciatica ? Sometimes the nerve is pinched between vertebrae,
or its passageways are narrowed by arthritis or swelling of a
sprained ligament in the area, and it becomes irritated and tender. Rarely,
an abscess, blood clot, or growth may push on the nerve. At times,
no exact cause is found, but a movement that is normally harmless
(such as bending over) suddenly brings on violent pain. Although
recent studies point to normal activity as the best treatment,
the most common therapy involves resting for a couple of days,
followed by a normal routine and low-impact exercise.

- Surgical treatment for patients with certain types of lower
back pain provides better relief than nonsurgical treatment, according
to studies by researchers from the MGH, the Maine Medical Assessment
Foundation and the University of Washington at Seattle. The studies,
reported in the August Spine, looked at patients treated for two
common causes of low back and leg pain -- sciatica, severe lower
back pain that radiates into a leg, and spinal stenosis, a narrowing
of the canal carrying the spinal cord that causes back and leg
pain in the elderly. In both groups, surgically treated patients
reported greater levels of improvement after one year than those
treated by such nonsurgical means as rest, medication, exercise,
physical therapy and spinal manipulation.

- Sciatica - Sciatica is a pain in the butt, literally. Caused
by an irritation of the sciatic nerve, this pain can radiate down
the back of the leg and all the way to the foot. It feels like
burning, pins and needles or an electrical sensation. It has many
causes, including tight hamstrings, tight buttocks, biomechanical
problems, leg-length discrepancy. runnersworld.com

- Sciatica and the McKenzie Method - The McKenzie Method addresses
sciatica in two different ways, depending on its cause. If the
sciatica is caused by damage to a disc, the McKenzie therapist
tries different specialized exercises to determine which of these
will reduce or relieve the symptoms. When the indicated McKenzie
exercise is identified, the patient is taught to do the simple
exercise at home. When the symptoms move out of the legs, buttocks,
and centralize back to the lower back, additional exercise movements
are utilized to relieve the underlying disc problem. mckenziemethod.com
