Often they can see which nerve is being compressed on a MRI.
Also, sometimes they can tell which nerve is compressed from
your symptoms, e.g., if the pain shoots down your leg then

They often remove spurs if they are in there anyway, but it
is often said that they just grow right back. The only
surgery to correct inadequate disc space is a fusion. The
odds of failure with fusions increase significantly when
they do two levels, are awful when they fuse 3 levels, and
are off the chart when they do 4 levels.

You might enjoy my "Bad Backs" page, a collection of links
at which you can do your own research so you know better
what your options and chances are. The vast majority of
spine surgeons greatly exaggerate the success of their
surgeries to prospect surgery candidates. You might want
to look into the VAX-D treatment, www.vax-d.net . That is
what I would try first, if I were you. Good luck.
